The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is one of the most prestigious competitive exams in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to services like Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service and Indian Foreign Service.

Understanding the official UPSC syllabus is the first and most important step for every aspirant preparing for the exam.

The examination consists of three stages:

✓ Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

✓ Main Examination (Mains)

✓ Personality Test (Interview)

The final ranking is based on Mains + Interview marks only.

1. UPSC Preliminary Examination Syllabus

The Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the UPSC Civil Services Exam.

Exam Pattern

✓ Two papers (Objective type)

✓ Each paper – 200 marks

✓ Duration – 2 hours each

Negative marking applicable

CSAT paper requires 33% minimum qualifying marks 

Marks obtained in prelims are not counted for final ranking.

Paper I – General Studies (GS)

The syllabus includes:

✓ Current events of national and international importance

✓ History of India and the Indian National Movement

✓ Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography

Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy

✓ Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives

✓ Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change

✓ General Science 


Paper II – CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test)

Topics include:

✓ Comprehension

✓ Interpersonal and communication skills

✓ Logical reasoning and analytical ability

✓ Decision-making and problem solving

✓ General mental ability

✓ Basic numeracy (Class X level mathematics)

✓ Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables)

Note:

✓ This paper is qualifying only (33% minimum required).

2. UPSC Main Examination Syllabus

Candidates who qualify the prelims appear for the Main Examination, which is a written exam.

Structure of UPSC Mains

The exam consists of 9 papers, out of which 7 papers are counted for merit ranking. 


Qualifying Papers

✓ Paper A – Indian Language (300 marks)

✓ Paper B – English (300 marks)

Candidates must only qualify these papers.

Paper I – Essay (250 Marks)

Candidates must write essays on multiple topics such as:

General Studies Paper I (250 Marks)
